Kosali Simon

Kosali Simon joined the Paul H. O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University in 2010. In 2019, she was appointed associate vice provost for health sciences. In 2021, she was elected to the National Academy of Medicine. In 2022, she was named a Paul O’Neill Chair at the O’Neill School and a distinguished professor at Indiana University. Simon is a health economist who specializes in applying economic analysis in the context of health insurance and health care policy. Her current research mainly focuses on the impact of health insurance reform on health care and labor market outcomes, and on the causes and consequences of the opioid crisis.

Simon is a research associate of the National Bureau for Economic Research. She is currently serving as president of the American Society of Health Economists (ASHEcon). From 2004 to 2017, she served as a board member of the American Economic Association’s Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession (CSWEP), and she directed the national mentoring program for female assistant professors in economics. She currently serves as a health advisor to the Congressional Budget Office and as an editor of the Journal of Health Economics.
