John N. Peyton headed the Minneapolis Federal Reserve during a turbulent period in history—through the Great Depression, a dramatic restructuring of the Federal Reserve System, the financial stresses of World War II and the postwar economic boom. The Minneapolis Fed’s first president molded the bank in his own image: rock-solid yet approachable, a source of strength in troubled times. His force of personality, managerial skill and championing of promotional and educational initiatives helped restore public faith—lost during the Depression—in the nation’s central bank.
