Operation Walking Shield

Operation Walking Shield, an initiative of the Walking Shield Society, will truck nearly 700 excess houses from Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota and Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana to 13 Indian reservations in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Montana. According to A New Way Home,sponsors include the Pine Ridge and Rosebud reservations of South Dakota and the Standing Rock and Turtle Mountain reservations of North Dakota.

After transport, the three-bedroom duplexes will serve as rental housing for more than 3,000 families. The project received a Maxwell Award for Excellence from the Fannie Mae Foundation in May 1999. The Maxwell Award, which consists of a $35,000 grant, recognizes organizations working to develop and maintain affordable housing for low-income Americans.
