Educational Outcomes and Minnesota’s Economy

A deeper look at how the education system serves Minnesota’s students.

While Minnesota is a national leader in education on some dimensions—including equalizing school funding and promoting greater access via open enrollment and charter schools—its efforts have not translated into better outcomes for all students. Data show that Minnesota’s public schools consistently underserve students from low-income families, Indigenous students, and students of color. Data scientist Vanessa Palmer reexamined the issue and reaffirmed that our statewide achievement gaps remain deep and persistent—and are growing even worse. When our current system limits opportunity for any of our children, it holds back our workforce and economy.
