Broadening Excellence in Economics

The Research Division at the Minneapolis Fed strives to increase the pipeline of individuals into the economics profession. To support these efforts, the Research Division and the University of Minnesota have partnered in an initiative to broaden opportunities for undergraduate students to access training and advanced research in economics. This initiative encompasses a new series of intermediate-level courses at the U of M, Economics at Work, as well as a practical Research Training Program at the Minneapolis Fed.

In spring 2025 we launched the first course in the series, Economics at Work: The Wealth of African Nations, which was followed by the first Research Training Program at the Minneapolis Fed. This innovative two-week intensive experience for selected students offers both new instruction and exposure to research seminars and opportunities with economists at the Bank. The program also fosters meaningful continuing mentorship relationships between students and economists. The following articles describe the 2025 Broadening Excellence in Economics (BEE) experience:

BEE 2026 Research Training Program

The BEE Initiative is now in its second year, and candidates can apply to the 2026 Research Training Program running from May 18 to May 29 at the Minneapolis Fed. Applicants will be asked to provide a transcript (unofficial or official), a CV, and a statement of interest. In the statement, students should include why they are applying for the Research Training Program, what they hope to get out of the program, and how they think participating will help them fulfill future goals.

Applications for the 2026 Research Training Program are open.

To apply, students must be enrolled in Economics at Work: The Wealth of African Nations (ECON 4319) at the University of Minnesota.

Key dates:

  • February 27, 2026: Deadline to apply for the Research Training Program.
  • March 20, 2026: Applicants will be notified of decisions.
  • May 18, 2026: Research Training Program begins.
